Applejack known as “America’s First Spirit”, has been a part of American culture prior to earning its independence. The Laird family, America’s oldest family of distillers, has produced applejack in New Jersey since 1698. They trace their distillation lineage back to Alexander Laird, who emigrated to the New World from Scotland. Today the father/daughter team of Larrie Laird (eight generation) and Lisa Laird Dunn (ninth generation), who now lead Laird & Company, are safeguarding its traditions and legacy. Lisa’s son, Gerard joined the ranks in 2018 and her daughter, Laird Emilie, in 2022, as tenth generation, ensuring the company’s continuity. The Laird family holds the oldest recorded date for a commercial transaction for cider spirits, recorded in their account book of operations, in 1780. Holders of Federal Distillery #1, NJ Distilled Spirits Plant-1 and Internal Revenue Bonded Warehouse #1, proudly continue to produce their historic Laird’s Applejack and Laird’s Apple brandies. In the early 1940’s, the Laird family expanded their operation by purchasing two additional distilleries, in New York and Virginia, close to apple growing regions. As of the mid-1970’s, all distilling was consolidated to their distillery outside of Charlottesville, VA. The Laird historic distillery holds VA Distilled Spirits Plant-5 and is the oldest operating distillery in the state of Virginia. Painstaking care is used in the production of Laird’s Apple brandy, which is one of the purest spirit beverages available. Produced from only tree ripened apples, with no cultures, yeasts, sugar or blending agents employed. Today, Laird & Company produces nine expressions of apple spirits which are enjoying a renewed interest from craft bartenders across the US and globally who are seeking its bottlings that exemplify authenticity, historical continuity, craftmanship and family ties that span three centuries.
